Chasing hogs in hoodies ? Yup……

Pyramid Lake is home to the world’s largest cutthroat trout right outside of Reno, NV and is one of the most unique fisheries in the country to say the least. Large mountains jousting out of a wild desert landscape. Ginormous trout rolling in the mornings, taunting you with every bit of three foot and twenty pounds plus.

. Whoah ! There goes another chasing a baitfish underneath the surface at Mach speed.

What a whirlwind of a season, as most of the West has been sitting in a high pressure spring system for what is generally considered the coldest time of the winter. But that has not kept the fish from eating. The bite often mimics the weather we want. consistency. It’s a buggy time of year. As we all love watching that little orange ball disappears as that big Lahontan swimming by inhaling your midge.

These fish eat a bit differently, often eating in the run allowing that bobber to disappear for seconds. The moment you look away, good-bye bobber. So please take in the vast desert landscape as the sun creeps up into the clouds, putting on an early morning light show.

**Morning bueaty, what a way to start the day.**

Fish are scattered all over the lake so it’s not necessary to pile in with the masses, but they are there for a reason. That does not mean you cannot go seek a little peace and quiet and catch a couple fish. Since we have been in a false spring for so long the fish are stacking up in all their favorite spring locations. These fish have been on the Chase so don’t be afraid to pull out the sink line and beetles n buggers. The sandy beaches allow you to get that line on the bottom to dredge these fish up as they cruise the shelves.

Switch up your cadence until you find what they want. Remember, that pause in between strips allows that beetle to float up and do its magic. Our favorite is the Doug Oulette special, white foam with chartreuse chenille. I’d put money on it. That fly has caught more fish stripping in this lake than any other. Pair it up with a black bugger and you’re golden.

Things can get crazy at times. even triples. I’ll keep saying it, fish are moving.

More and more fish are cruising. Not way up in the shallows like pre spawn but they are moving.

So while everyone feels they need a little bit of weather, all you really need is a bit of time. Give yourself 2-3 days and come take a shot at the World’s Largest Cutthroat.
